CFGBA was founded in 2005 by a small group of building industry professionals who were passionate about the environment and excited about the innovative strategies that were evolving to address the negative impacts of buildings on the natural environment. Since then, the organization has grown to a network of nearly 600 individuals and businesses with more than 180 dues-paying sponsors and members.
CFGBA advances its mission through educational programs for professionals and the public. Monthly general meetings feature presentations on various facets of green building. Past topics have included Introduction to LEED, solar energy, urban forestry, low impact development, tax incentives for energy efficiency, water conservation and candidate forums. These programs have drawn as many as 132 attendees and consistently attract newcomers. Tabletop exhibits showcasing local green building services and products add to the educational experience and provide businesses with a targeted marketing opportunity. These monthly meetings are held at the Balcony at 33 S. Front Street on the second Wednesday of each month. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for networking, socializing and refreshments at the Balcony’s cash bar.
With funding from ARRA through the NC Green Business Fund, CFGBA opened its Building Performance Training Center in February 2011. The primary purpose of the center is to provide training leading to certifications by the Building Performance Institute, such as Building Analyst, Envelope Professional and Residential Building Envelope Whole House Air Leakage Control Installer. Additional training offerings include NC Healthy Built Homes, Infrared Thermography, RESNET Energy Rater and Energy Star. CFGBA welcomes the opportunity to co-host classes, lunch-and-learn sessions and other events in the training center.
CFGBA hosts an annual Solar/Green Building Tour in conjunction with the statewide and national tours organized by the North Carolina Solar Energy Association (NCSEA) and the American Solar Energy Society. The tour enables the public to visit exemplary green projects in the Cape Fear area.
In 2009 and 2010, the CFGBA co-hosted the Green Living Conference and Expo with Greater Wilmington Business Journal and Wilma Magazine. CFGBA also has hosted small expos in conjunction with the Solar and Green Tour.
In 2011, CFGBA launched Sustainable Saturdays, a series of classes to educate home owners about energy efficient home improvements. Outreach and educational programs will continually evolve to meet the changing needs of the community.
CFGBA is the proud recipient of 2 prestigious grant awards from the NC Green Business Fund and ARRA.
